“Hi Eric,I have been sending so many applications and so far no reply and no interview invitation. What could be the problem?”
More concerns...
“I have B.com(accounting option and CPA II,10YEARS EXPERIENCE IN AUDIT,NGO and MICROFINANCE. I have applied for MORE THAN 100 ACCOUNTING JOBS...but NONE HAS EVER BEEN POSITIVE for EVEN SHORT LISTING.I URGENTLY NEED A JOB AFTER MY CONTRACT EXPIRED.What could be the problem and how can you assist URGENTLY…?”
“I have applied many jobs on the position of accounts assistant, which is the job am currently in for the past 4 years, but surprisingly i have never been invited for a single interview. what could be the matter?”
“I have tried like 60 applications with 40 unreplied, like 19 regrets... Should I give UP?”
And so, today I’d like to respond to these questions and concerns. Plus, give you solution.
First…
I Know How It Feels. I’ve Been There
I can't tell the number of job applications I made, --immediately after college--and never heard back.
Simply put, they're many!
And so, I know how it feels. The frustration. The hopelessness. The desperation and stress.
Not a good place to be at all!
I had 3 options.
- Option # 1: Just give up
- Option # 2: Keep on trying
- Option # 3: Find a way to make it work
I couldn't go with option # 1. I couldn't give up. I needed a job desperately!
The second option is something I tried. But for how long could you keep on trying?
Every year which passed trying and trying, meant 3 things:
- I was losing my years with nothing to show in terms of work experience for that past year.
- Someone had gone ahead past me, with one year of working experience. Which means my chances of landing jobs were becoming slimmer and slimmer.
- I was going to start allover again--from scratch--the next year, because I didn't build any experience that I can step on, to make the next career move.
None of the 3 was going to ever get me anywhere. I was losing every single year that past.
And I was losing in a big way, that made my chances slimmer and slimmer with every passing moment.
Because here's what usually happens.
The more years we spend without job. Or without great jobs which align with our skill-level, education and competency. The more that affects our ability to land future better jobs.
Because…
If we’ve been without a job for a long time, hiring managers get wary when they see that gap in our CV.
Those BIG GAPS in our CV becomes another roadblock we have to overcome.
Hiring manager wonder why there are big gaps in our CV.
And if we were just without job, it tells them we are perhaps “less competent”, even if that's not true. And that’s why we’ve not had a job for a long time.
It all works against us.
It makes landing future job interviews, and job offers harder and harder--with every passing year!
The BIG GAPS have a negative “avalanche effect”, that if not checked, sparks a downward spiral movement in our career.
I knew that's what was going to be happening if I went with option # 2: keep trying.
So my only option was option # 3, which was to..
Find A Way To Make It Work
I realized, I could keep on trying. Sending more and more applications...and risk my entire career.
Or I could step out, and find solution.
Talk about negative motivation!
Now, when the risks are so high, you don't just sit. You find answers. And that was my only shot.
But here was the problem I encountered immediately I decided to step out and find solution.
When I asked people for advice as to...
Why I was not getting job interviews. What I could do to change my situation. What the problem was. And what solution to the problem would be,
They all gave me fundamentally the same answer.
They all told me: “Keep on trying. Keep on sending more CVs. One day, your efforts will pay!”
And that was another problem…
Do you tell someone who's just been hit by a car, and they're struggling for their last breathe.
And they can't even breath properly, because they are running out of breathe…
Do you tell them: “Keep on breathing!”?
They're dying. They cannot breath!
If you're going to tell them “Keep on breathing”... you might as well tell them, “ Just die. There’s no hope for you!”
What you do is you get ambulance, or stop any car driving by. Whether it's a police car, minister’s entourage, it DOESN'T MATTER!
You tell them to stop, forget about where they were going. Get this person, rush him to the hospitals. Right into the emergency room. And SAFE LIFE!
That’s what you do!
It's an EMERGENCY.
So, when everyone told me, “Keep on trying”.
It was like telling a dying man hit by a speeding car--and struggling for his last breathe--“ Keep on breathing!”
The reason I was asking them for help was because I’d done what they’re were now telling me to do. And it hadn't worked.
I needed SOLUTION. And they were not helping me.
I had an URGENT CASE.
I felt like this reader who wrote this concern...

Would you tell this reader: “Keep on trying”...when s/he’s submitted 40+ applications for a job s/he is qualified for?
Even more interestingly, would you tell him/her, like most people do tell us: “Do volunteer work. Get more experience!”?
S/he has 10 year experience and has worked with NGOs, and MICROFINANCE.
That’d be ridiculous!
Yet, that’s what they tell us.
This reader has everything these career ‘experts’ tell us we need in order to get a job.
Yet, here s/he is!
Even after submitting 40 + applications, s/he has received ZERO RESULTS!
S/he NEEDS SOLUTION.
But don't tell him/her to send more job applications or do volunteer-work!
That’s how I felt.
My case was urgent. It was emergency.
Like a man bleeding profusely after being run over by a speeding car, and risking losing his life,
I was risking my entire career with every passing month... year ...that I didn't land job interviews!
Except I’d not die in the next second. BUT I’D EVENTUALLY DIE!
I could see the demise of my career life.
And a bleak future stared at me in the face.
When you can see the end of the rope, you don't sit. You fight your way back to life.
And that was my only chance. FIGHT BACK TO LIFE!
So, I had to turn to ‘Professional CV-Writers’ and here was...
My Sad Experience With ‘Professional CV-Writers” And Recruiters
Thought these career ‘experts’ would help me. So how did it go?
Well, let's just say there was no hope for me.
These ‘experts’ focus on pointless stuff. Most recruiters will talk about CV formats and CV Templates.
It’s as if hiring managers hire you for your CV Format. You'll be directed to a link to download a CV Template.
To say the least, I realized all that was ‘cheap advice” that'll never work.
Turning to “Professional CV-Writers” there was no difference.
They'll talk about ‘Professional Looking CV’...which is a ‘high language’ with ‘good sounding’ fancy words that mean nothing!
What does ‘Professional Looking CV’ mean?
Do we take a suit and a tie and dress up the CV? Or what do we do?
They leave you feeling more confused!
They'll tell you: “your CV should ‘sound professional’.”
“Sound professional?????” ….What does that even mean?
How do we make it ‘sound professional’?
What do we do? Or is there a way to make our CVs talk???
Do you ever think there’s any hiring manager whom, when he’s open job position,
...and looking for a job candidate to fill, spends sleepless nights wondering:
“....Where can I get a job candidate with ‘professional looking CV’ ...or ‘professional-sounding CV’?”
Or wondering:
“I wish I’d get a job candidate with the “PERFECT CV FORMAT for this position. Where could I get one?”
ABSOLUTELY NOT!
It’s even ridiculous when you think about!!!
Yet, that's what these ‘experts’ focus on.
None of the advice I got gave me solution. And none of it works!
People pay these ‘experts’ for that, only to realize later, they were sold smoke. …“high-sounding language” which means nothing!
I’ve had the experience,...and it's sad, but true!
What most of these ‘experts’ don't realize’ve is:human beings are swayed at psychological level--through building INSTANT CONNECTION--to get them to respond in your favor.
And that's what your CV should do.
They know less about the deep psychological tactics to get the hiring managers to say “YES, WE NEED TO MEET THIS CANDIDATE”.
(Note: there are true CV-Writing experts and recruiters who know and can show you how to craft a CV that'd get you hired. Amazing career experts! But they're few.)
But most recruiters and ‘Professional CV-Writers’ have no idea how to craft a Winning CV, beyond CV-templates and CV formats
That's why they'll continue giving you “cheap” advice.
They're clueless, of what really influences hiring managers and recruiters.
I was not getting solution from them.
And so, I had to ignore their advice.
I had to admit that their advice was theoretically good, and well intended, but practically useless!
I still needed solution. A lasting solution that'd fix my challenge.
Which is...
Why I Spend Over 3 Years of Research And 3000 + Hours To Uncover How To Craft CV That Land Job Interviews!
Yes, I know this may be weird, but I had to do it.
I spent over 3 years and 3000+ hours... researching, studying and learning what it’d take to write a CV that’d land job interviews.
(Hint: negative motivation can take you miles)
After spending 100+ hours on my CV, I started to land job interviews. And not just that, but I got job offers!
But now, this was no longer about landing job interviews or landing job offers anymore!
It was beyond that.
I wanted to know:
- Why a CV would fail to secure job interviews
- What hiring managers look for in a CV, to shortlist candidate for a job interview
- How to craft a CV that land job interview almost every time, for the rest of my career life
- Why would people with LESS experience, and WITHOUT ‘right’ credentials, land job interviews, while qualified candidates failed
- What the best job candidate did on their CV to land job interviews seemingly effortlessly, that I didn't do.And how they crafted their CV and guaranteed success almost every time they send in job application.
I was not satisfied with landing job interviews and securing job offers.
That was not enough!
I wanted to FIX the job rat-race forever!
I didn't want to ever go through what I went through. Ever again!
I didn't want to feel how I felt, --the desperation, the frustration, the hopelessness, the “feeling like a loser” even when I knew I was not!
I wanted the “LOST YEARS” to be compensated for.
I wanted to FIX the PROBLEM, FOR LIFE!

So, even though my CV was landing job interviews and job offers, I went beyond that.
Here's what I did…
I spent hundreds of hours studying what top job-candidates did, that I didn't do, to land job interviews, and job offers.
I talked to the hiring managers I could access, to know what they cared about, and what’d make them want to hire a job candidate when they looked at their CV.

...My goal was to uncover how a WINNING CV would be, and the INS and OUTS of how to craft one.
I accessed and learnt from TRUE world-top recruiters, with 12+ years of experience recruiting, who have seen hundred of thousands of CVs, recruited hundreds of thousands of job candidates, across all levels of career…
...So I can learn what recruiters, and hiring manager look for in a CV when recruiting. So I can uncover the KEY MISTAKES, they’ve seen in these CVs, which would make them not hire a candidate.

Imagine seeing your career life on the line. And not knowing what to do. Having ZERO CONTROL, and seeing the bleak future staring at you!
I know the feeling. I know the frustration. I know the hopelessness.
I tried the advice most ‘experts’ give us: “try harder”... “Send more CVs” …”Do volunteer work”... “Give us your CV so we can ‘review’ and fix it”... “Upload your CV to job sites” … “Subscribe to job alerts” etc.
And I didn't find lasting solution.
Just like most of you guys haven't. (So when you write to me, and tell me about it. I know!)
Back then, had someone offered to help me out. And reveal to me what I now know, I’d have paid anything to learn that.
But there was no one to give me that opportunity!
The advice I got from career ‘experts’ (Professional CV-writers, recruiters etc) were “cheap and superficial” to say the least.
They didn't work!
I’d make my own way.
Not a good place to be!
And I don't one you to have to pave your own way. It’s not any easy path--from my experience.
And that's why I want to share EVERYTHING with you.
Withholding nothing!
Because I never got anyone to show me all this, when I desperately needed it!
But here's the good news,

You don't have to go through the rigour I went through. You don't have to spend 3000 + hours, and over 3 years that took me, to find solution.
You don't have to go through the long learning curve, and ruthless testing I did.

What I Learnt About Why Your CV Would FAIL To Land You Job Interviews, Even When You're Qualified
There are only 2 reasons hiring managers would ignore your job application.
- Reason # 1: They've no open position for the job you've applied. In other words, they aren't hiring.
- Reason # 2: They've open position, and desperately needs a job candidate to fill that position, but...
They DON'T SEE WHY THEY SHOULD TALK TO YOU, ABOUT THE POSSIBILITY OF HIRING YOU. Because, they CANNOT SEE the VALUE you'd bring to them.
(Note: NOT because your CV template is wrong! But because they can't see the value you’d bring them)
Now, the solution to the first reason is pretty simple and straightforward: focus on job opportunities that are already there.
And for most of us, that’s what we do.
We apply for advertised open positions.
Which means, when your CV fail to land you job interviews, the MAIN reason is the second!
Yes, they desperately need a candidate. That's why they placed the advert.
...But, when you submit your CV, they CAN’T SEE WHY they should meet you for interview, because they CANNOT SEE YOUR VALUE.
So, they ignore your CV, even though they desperately need to fill the position, and you’ve experience.
That's where crafting a “SELLING” COVER LETTER and CV matter!
Truth is, for all the fee we paid through college/university. For all the hard work we put in to get good grades. For all the 3 - 5 years we spent getting that diploma, or degree, or Master’s Degree…
Your VALUE is only measured using those 2 PIECES OF PAPER.
And you get ONLY 7 SECONDS to show that VALUE,otherwise, you’re forgotten.
Sad, but true!
After college, I’d have scoffed at that. I actually did!
I’d say...“What do you mean? Just 2 pieces of paper determine my value?
...Are you kidding me????
You should see my grades. You’ve no idea how good I am.”
Later...
I Learnt The Hardest Lesson Of My Life
That my good grades were only good to my lecturers.
Oh, and maybe, my uncle, and that old auntie of mine.
Outside that, no one cared!
They didn't mean much to anyone else.
I couldn't believe that for everything I did in college, ONLY 2 PIECES OF PAPER where the yardstick with which the outside world measured my value!
And that for all those years of hard work and effort, I’d be given an attention span of ONLY 7 seconds, to tell people why they may need me to work with them.
And that, I can either understand that only those 2 pieces of paper were the only thing that mattered, or I’d be on my own!
I was shocked by how people outside here (and by ‘people’ I’m looking at you hiring managers) can have totally different stick of measuring my value!
Which is why…
When People Scoff At Mastering How To Write A Winning Cover Letter And Irresistible CV, I Don't Get Surprised
I don't even need to convince them about anything.
Because I know soon or later, they’ll learn the hard lessons, most of us have learnt.
I scoffed at that idea too!
NOW, I DON'T.
Which is why I spent over 3 years, invested lots of money and 3000 + hours to master these 2 important documents.
I know those 2 pieces of paper are the hub that drive careers. And that experience, technical competency, social competency and all the degrees, wouldn't help, if you don't master these 2 documents.
I know by now, you know that too. That's why you’re here!
Even more--just like I came to discover--you know “Googling” about CV templates,and downloading CV format PDFs, is a waste of time!
Because here's the thing.
Just like you downloaded that PDF CV template, so did most other job applicants.
Now, all your CVs look similar. All mundane...all average... all the same!
Just like you went to that job site, where you’ve uploaded your CV, and asked them for CV template,
...and they gave you a link, and you went and downloaded it, so did over 95% of job candidates.
Ask yourself this: why is it that I downloaded this CV template from that job site, and then, uploaded the same CV to the same job site, with the same CV format they recommended. And yet, I’ve never received a single job interview from them?
You don't need to be an expert to know CV template downloads are useless!
If CV was about the format and templates, when you downloaded the template they recommended,
... wrote your CV, and uploaded it again to their site wouldn't they have called you for job interviews for the job alerts they've been sending you?
You’ve used the same CV template they recommended, and applied for numerous jobs, and haven't got any job interview yet.
...Or, you’ve got 1 or 2 interviews!
Why is that?
Shouldn't you be getting more job interviews?
WINNING CV is not about templates, or formats. Neither is CV an official, and formal document that you send to companies to express your interest in a job they posted.
All that's cheap stuff!
Yet’s it’s the exact idea ‘experts’ sell you.
(And when I say ‘experts’, I’m looking at you Professional CV-Writers and recruiters who talk about CV templates, CV formats, and ‘professional looking’ ‘professional sounding’ CVs)
And 99% of these ‘experts’ are wrong!
If it was all that cheap as they tell us, none of us would have trouble landing job interviews, and job offers!
We do what they tell us.
And what do we have to show?
NOTHING,
..but a bunch of downloaded CV templates,...from job sites.
Plus, countless CV format templates for different job positions--as if there is ‘right’ template for a specific job position.
Yes, I followed their advice to the latter.
And you know how I ended up?
Hopeless, more frustrated, stressed, and in the verge of giving up. Because almost nothing worked!
And the templates they recommended?
Well, they're still sitting in my computer. I can send them to you, if you’d like!
And if you think this was just me. Or I’m just ranting about ‘Professional CV-Writers’ and recruiters.
You’d be wrong!
Let me show you the reality on the ground.

I asked them about their experience with these ‘recruiters’ and ‘Professional CV-Writers’...
Plus, what advice they’ve received from these ‘experts’ and the results they've got from their advice, if they've ever engaged with any of them.

These ‘experts’ talk about CV formats, and templates. As if that's what hiring managers hire you for.
Obviously, this reader wasn't getting the results she desired from that CV.
And now, they tell her they use the same format???? And because the format is similar they cannot help her beyond that???
SOMEONE KILL ME NOW!!!

Notice what this readers was told “...but they told me my CV was in the same FORMAT as the one they use and therefore they could not provide much help”
This is what I call “cheap advice”.
If CVs were about CV FORMATS and Templates, there lots of those from “Google”... and it’s FREE!
And if that’s what would get you hired, wouldn't we all be having lots of job interviews and job offers everyday?
Give me a break, CV ‘experts’!
Okay, it gets even more interesting.
I told this reader to send me her CV, so I can see it.
The one these CV ‘experts’ said they couldn't help since according to them, it had “Perfect CV FORMAT”, like the one they use.
(Which--according to them--it should be getting her job interviews
I wanted to see it for 2 main reasons:
- Reason # 1: So I can give her constructive positive feedback as to why her CV was not generating desired job interviews. (This was the main reason)
- Reason # 2: Curious about what these ‘expert’ call ‘Perfect CV Format’: it doesn't hurt to have a look at what these CV ‘experts’ called “Perfect CV Format”.
HAHA...the “magic CV format” that--according to them--would be getting you job interviews!
She send it to me.
I took a glance at it, and I could dig out--in under 5 seconds--5 problems with the CV...and why it was not generating as much interviews.
So, here's the email I sent her, with my quick concise feedback on what was sabotaging her in her CV.

Readername,I got your email, and yes, your info was sufficient.Now, I took a quick glance at your CV and here's my quick concise feedback at a glance. # 1: Both CVs are way too long (4 pages).That's one of the things that would make hiring manager overlook it. Even with 20 years of experience, your CV should not exceed 3 pages!
# 2: The CV format is a bit complex for easy-scanning:
Hiring managers want simple format they could easily scan and tell your value in less than 10 Seconds. That's not possible with any of your CV
# 3: No strategic positioning
Your CV is not "SELLING YOU” upfront. And that a big mistake.
With hiring managers receiving hundreds or even thousands of CVs, you'd want your CV to sell you right away, at a glance. That's what gets you interviews!
#4: Unnecessary Info:
Some info in your both CVs do not EARN THEIR SPACE IN THE PAGE. They are unnecessary. (But for the second CV you tried to improve that a bit, though much needs to be done)
That unnecessary info leads to CV clutter, which hiring manager cannot stand.
#5: Role-based CV
Your CV are mostly role-based. And it's hard for such CV to cut through the clutter of other CVs and get the attention of the hiring manager.
It needs to be Achievement-based, to catch the eyes of hiring managers, retain their attention impress them and trigger interview calls.
That's my quick concise feedback on your CV, which I spotted in under 5 seconds for both CVs.
There's more I can dig out, when I take time to review them.

Now, what do you notice from my concise feedback?
You'll notice:
# 1: What they called “Perfect CV Format” was too complex for easy scanning.
#2: Even if the CV format would’ve been okay, there are other 4 grave mistakes that had NOTHING to do with CV FORMATS. But had everything to do with hiring manager's psychology.
Even the so called “Great CV FORMAT” by these ‘CV experts’, was too complex for any hiring manager to ‘scan’ the CV!
Hint: Hiring managers don't read CVs. They ‘scan’ them. And you’ve ONLY 7 SECONDS (not minutes, but seconds) to get their attention, otherwise you’re forgotten)
And I dug out...on-the-go, other more mistakes all in under 5 seconds (2 CVs by the way).
Here's even more comment about job candidates and their experience with these “Professional CV-Writers” and recruiters...
“...I’ve been applying jobs I fully qualify but no feedback..my CV WAS REVIEWED by one of the BEST RECRUITING AGENCIES and THEY SAID IS GOOD. What could be the problem?”
Novice job candidates say: “I need a professional CV-Writer to review my CV.”
When I hear that, I just smile.
Then, ask: “Why’s that? Do you think they can help you?”
Guys, you just need to borrow a leaf from the above comments.
This job candidate gets his/her CV REVIEWED by the BEST RECRUITING AGENCIES.
And what are the results of that?
ZERO FEEDBACK... EVEN AFTER APPLYING FOR JOBS S/HE FULLY QUALIFIES!
I didn't get solution from these ‘CV experts’--professional CV-Writers and recruiters. And so are most of you!
So, this is not I just me ranting about them. You’ve seen other job candidates’ experience with these ‘experts’!
You get ZERO VALUE, ZERO RESULTS from these ‘experts’
The reality is…
If Hiring Managers Use CV To Determine The Value Of Top Executives. It Cannot Be That Cheap
